Why do people often get better results with their horse when they stop trying so hard? Because horses are incredibly intelligent. Show them clearly what you want, then give them time to think. Don't repeat the same thing over and over. Let them process, understand, and find the answer. Be clear. Take small steps. Trust your horse's ability to learn. The horse sees what you can't hide. He doesn't hear your words, he reads your energy. And the only thing he's really asking is: what mode are you in right now? Come in angry, frustrated, rushing, and you're in predatory mode. To a prey animal, that energy means danger; so he braces, he questions, he pulls away. Not difficult. Just honest. Come in relaxed, centered, present and suddenly there's no threat to defend against. Now there's something to trust. Something to soften into. He's not reacting to you. He's reacting to the state you brought him. Your job was never to control him. It's to become the presence that makes the right thing easy, for him and for you at once.

Three ways to practise doing nothing. Not because it's soft. Because it's the hardest thing you will ever offer a horse: your presence, with nothing attached to it. Try one of them this week. Standing with a horse, asking for nothing. This isn't doing nothing. It's the hardest thing there is: to be present without an agenda, to create space instead of filling it. The Masks A horse does not read your words. He reads your energy. Your intention. Your coherence. He knows within seconds whether you are yourself, or whether you are hiding behind a mask. This is not mysticism. It is survival. For millions of years his life has depended on reading the being in front of him correctly, the first time. So he does not ask: Are you skilled? He asks: Are you honest? If you carry doubt, he feels it. If you pretend to feel something you do not feel, he sees through it. If you apply pressure without clarity, he will flee, or he will fight. Trust is not a technique. It is an ethical obligation. Not because it sounds good. Because the horse has no choice.
